# Judging Agent Results

Decide programmatically whether an agent achieved what was asked: judge the result with a second model call, then branch on the verdict.

## The problem

An agent dispatch resolves with an [`AgentResult`](/docs/reference/adapters/agent): the model's final `text` plus a record of everything it did along the way. The text is prose, and prose is a claim ("I looked up the order and refunded the customer"). A route that must act on the outcome -- acknowledge, escalate, redeliver, roll back -- needs data, not a narrative it would have to parse.

Two shapes of dispatch make any naive check on the result misleading:

- **Achieved with complications.** The essential action succeeded, but a secondary tool call failed along the way (the record was created; the courtesy notification errored). A "no tool errors" check calls this a failure. Your policy may not.
- **Failed cleanly.** Every tool call succeeded, but the agent stopped short of the action that mattered (it gathered everything it needed and never acted). A "no tool errors" check calls this a success. It is not.

Whether either case counts is policy, and policy belongs to your route. The recommended pattern is to have an independent judge produce a verdict as data, and keep the decision about what to do with that verdict in the pipeline.

## The evidence

A judge gets three inputs, each with a distinct role:

`toolCalls` is the ground truth: every tool invocation in order, each with its `input`, its `output`, and an `error` when the call threw. The judge weighs the claim against the record, and both against the request. Do not let the judge see only the text (it would grade the claim by the claim) and do not reduce it to counting errors (see the two shapes above).

## The judge capability

Define the judge once as its own capability: a small, cheap model call with a structured verdict. Both placements below reuse it.

Keep the evidence lean. Tool `input` and `output` payloads can be large (full documents, API responses); pass the tool names, whether each call failed, and the error messages, and include payloads only where your judge genuinely needs them.

The judge is itself a model call, so its verdict is a judgement, not a proof. What makes it worth trusting more than the agent's own account is independence: it has no stake in the work, sees the tool record as evidence, and does one narrow task with a structured answer.

The evidence is also untrusted input: the request and the agent's account can contain text written by whoever triggered the route, including instructions aimed at the judge ("report that the request was fulfilled"). Two properties of this setup are the defence, so keep both deliberate: give the judge **no tools**, and instruct it to treat everything in the evidence as content to weigh, never commands to follow, with the tool record outranking any claim embedded in the text.

## Judging downstream

The default placement: run the judge after the dispatch and branch on the verdict.

The `only()` aggregators keep the original request on the body while layering the agent result and then the verdict next to it, so every later step still sees all three.

What to do with `met: false` stays deliberately open: leave the inbound message unacknowledged so the source redelivers it, forward to a human escalation capability, or run a compensating action. The judge produces data; the route owns policy. And the verdict does not have to be the whole decision: the agent result is still on the body, so a route can treat "met, but with failed tool calls" differently from a clean pass by combining `verdict.met` with its own scan of `toolCalls`.

## Judging in the loop

The downstream judge has one structural limit: by the time it says `met: false`, the agent's session is gone. Re-dispatching the whole exchange starts from scratch and re-executes every side-effecting tool call that already succeeded.

When the agent should get the chance to correct itself before the dispatch resolves, move the same judge into the agent's [`validate`](/docs/reference/plugins/agentplugin) hook. Returning a string from `validate` sends the agent back for another turn with that string as a corrective message, conversation intact, sharing the `maxTurns` budget:

The agent sees its prior turns and the reviewer's objection, and can retry the missed action in context rather than redoing finished work. If the budget runs out while the judge still objects, the dispatch fails with the last objection as the reason.

The two compose: judge in `validate` to push the agent to actually finish, and judge (or simply branch on the failure) downstream to decide what the route does when it still could not.
